Urgent Virtual Care

Urgent Virtual Care

Our Urgent Virtual Care (UVC) service is a new initiative by the Health Service Executive (HSE) South West.

UVC improves patient experience by ensuring our patients receive the right care, from the right clinicians, at the right time. Through the UVC Hub, we can navigate patients toward the most suitable care pathway, whether that means care in their home, scheduling for targeted services, or directing them to community resources.

The service allows General Practitioners (GPs) and paramedics to consult senior medical experts in Emergency or Geriatric Medicine via phone or video calls, offering alternative pathways for patients who may not need emergency care, but require timely and specialized attention. This collaboration ensures that patients receive care tailored to their needs without overburdening our Emergency Departments.

Our UVC Service is supported by a team of senior clinicians and operates through a centralised hub at Cork University Hospital. While the hub is based in Cork, it serves the entire HSE South West region. In their first month of service, the UVC team has handled over 410 referrals, with 69% of patients successfully redirected to more appropriate care pathways.

UVC is available Monday through Friday from 10am to 6pm, with referrals exclusively made by GPs and paramedics via Healthlink, email, or phone.
