Dr Rory O Brien

Rory has worked as a Consultant in Emergency Medicine at CUH since 2019. He has been clinical lead for Emergency Medicine at CUH since early 2023. He has subspecialty training in Paediatric Emergency Medicine so splits his clinical commitments between the Children’s Emergency Department and the Adult Emergency Department. Having graduated from UCC in 2007, and undertaking some general training posts he completed his specialty training in Australia, and his subspecialty training in the Royal Children’s Hospital, Melbourne.
He is the clinical lead for Simulation Based Training across the South/South West Hospital group. His primary aims for this position are to transform patient safety and quality of care, to innovate through research and to enhance staff engagement. This interest in simulation training has led him to develop several courses, for example the Healthcare Simulation Facilitator Foundation Programme and the Team-Based Trauma Life Support course both of which are run at the ASSERT Centre, UCC. Further to this, he is co-sponsor for national trauma training, Senior Lecturer at UCC and regularly directors Advanced Paediatric Life Support courses.
He has a keen interest in systems improvement, training as a tool for improvement, decision-making in practice, culture in a workplace setting and clinical leadership. He has run many patient focussed quality improvement projects. Further to this he has led the development of the new Children’s Emergency Department at CUH, The largest children’s ED outside of Dublin that is accredited for Emergency medicine, paediatric and GP training schemes. He is proud to be a part of the CUH ED team and has huge belief in his team to strive for excellence and continues to advocate for better conditions for both the patients and staff who work in the CUH ED ultimately with the vision for providing the best emergency care for our community.
