Welcome to your Emergency Medicine Rotation in Cork University Hospital!
At the beginning of each shift, start by introducing yourself to the senior doctor and CNM in charge of the department for the day.
Once you have familiarised yourself with your surroundings, and have a ‘handle’ on how things work in the department, you should get to work on being an active participant. During your time with us you should observe closely and help actively, to get the most out of your placement. You’ll find innumberable opportunities to establish essential clinical skills – evaluating, making clinical plans and commencing treatment for your patients, all under the close supervision of a senior doctor. You will also get the chance to carry out clinical procedures, such as phlebotomy, cannulation, arterial blood gas taking and suturing.
The Emergency Department is an energy-filled, busy environment – there will certainly not be any shortage of patients, and there are ample opportunities for learning! Enthusiastic, driven students are welcome to stay for as long as they wish, including evenings, nights and weekends. The more you put into your placement, the greater your rewards will be!
